Game 1: Lost 12-14
Game 2: Won 21-9
Record: 4-4

Nearly back to full strength, Westminster flashed some of last year's undefeated form at the plate -- unfortunately, it didn't happen until the last half of the second game.  The first game was a see-saw battle the whole way with neither team more than a few runs ahead.  The bottom of the seventh found Westminster trying to rally from a deficit to win the game.  It started off well with a couple of hits, but was unfortunately followed by three outs in the next four batters to end the comeback.  Charlie McElrath and Jesse Briones both went 3-4 at the plate.  Seven other batters had two hits apiece.

During the second game, Westminster started off slowly with only 3 runs in the first three innings.  The last four innings were a different story, however.  Dale Rae led off the top of the fourth with a home run and ignited a four-inning, 18-run rally that took the life out of Little Dog Productions.  Leading the winners was Rae who went 5-5 with that home run, capping a 7-8 night.  He was followed by Brett Cowman (4-5, triple), Brad Roetcisoender (3-5), Steve Rae (3-5, triple), Ray Baker (3-4, double) and Nick Robarge (3-4, double).

Game 1: Lost 18-20
Game 2: Lost 12-19
Record: 3-3

The Mustangs played without two key regulars tonight (vacation) against a tough returning team from last season and came up short in both games.  In the first game, they played catch-up for the first five innings but the bats came alive in the 6th and 7th for nine runs to tie the score at 15.  However, the rally stalled and they could not get the hits needed to get the winning run across the plate.  This pushed the game to an extra eighth inning where they eventually came up on the disappointing short end of the score.  Ray Baker went 5-5 at the plate while Charlie McElrath went 4-4 with a triple.  Nick Robarge also had 4 hits.

Westminster appeared to be a little shell-shocked from the first game loss as it took them until the 4th inning in the second game to score their first runs.  Finally, down 3-12 in the top of the 6th, the bats came alive and the Mustangs rallied for 8 runs to make a game of it.  But the Rum Runners scored 7 runs in their half of the 6th and that was pretty much the ball game.  In the losing cause, McElrath went 3-4 with another triple.  Next best were Dave Storm (triple), Steve Rae and Brett Cowman (triple, double) -- each with two hits apiece.

Bayside

Game 1: Won 20-9
Game 2: Won 21-3
Record: 3-1

Westminster's offense was in high gear tonight, and it started early in the first game.  Bayside batted first and was able to push five runners across the plate in their half of the 1st inning.  They must have been feeling pretty good about themselves -- until Westminster came to bat and proceeded to get hit after hit after hit.  When Bayside was finally able to record the third out of the 1st inning, Westminster had scored 13 runs.  Over the next four innings, Bayside was only able to manage another four runs to Westminster's seven.  The 10-run "mercy" rule was applied after the 5th inning.  Seven Westminster players had multiple hits in the game.  The offense was led by Dave Storm, Brad Roetcisoender (two doubles) and Brett Cowman who all had three hits apiece.

The 2nd game was more of the same as the Westminster offense kept up the hit parade. They banged out 21 hits in the five innings they played before the 10-run rule was again applied.  Nine Westminster players had a multiple hit game, led by Dale Rae who went 4-4 with three doubles.  The offense also received three hits apiece from Charlie McElrath (one double), Brett Cowman (two triples, one double), Ray Baker and Nick Robarge.

Beer Garden

Westminster Mustangs

Game 1: Won 20-10
Game 2: Lost 15-17
Record: 1-1

The Westminster Mustangs began their 2000 title defense in grand fashion.  Taking the lead in the 2nd inning, they never looked back en-route to a 10-run "mercy" rule win in 6 innings.  Beer Garden's pitching was erratic at times, providing the patient Westminster offense with nine walks.  Steve Rae, Brett Cowman and John Cooper led the hitting attack with three hits apiece.

The 2nd game was a different story, however.  Westminster's defense broke down a few times and gave Beer Garden extra outs in several innings.  Westminster played catch-up the whole game but had a chance to tie it and maybe even win it in the bottom of the seventh.  They came up short in a heartbreaker, though, with the tying runs on 2nd and 3rd.  Dale Rae led the offense with four hits (including a triple), followed by Charlie McElrath, Jesse Briones, Steve Rae and John Cooper who all had three hits apiece.
