Cypress North

Westminster Colts

The Westminster Colts finished the regular season on "All-Star" Tuesday (July 10) with a doubleheader sweep of Cypress North.

The wins gave Westminster a 7-6 record which was good enough for third place in the Men's Division 4 standings.

Jumping out to a big 9-0 lead in the top of the first, the Colts coasted to a 13-1 victory in the opener. Westminster struggled in game two but finally rallied for eight runs in the last two innings, winning 8-4. The Colts played their best defense of the year and had four innings where the side was retired in less than three minutes!

Westminster qualified for the playoffs for the second straight year. Last year's 11-5 regular-season record was good for fourth place. The Colts won just one playoff game and finished third.

Fri 7/06 8:30pm MM1 Overlake #4 Westminster Colts

The Westminster Colts jumped back above the .500 mark with a single-game victory against Overlake Christian June 6.

Jeff Hjort, Cory Lanman and Steve Jessup delivered three hits apiece as the Colts "rushed" to a 15-3 finish. The 10-run rule after five innings helped speed the game along before it was too dark. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was not played due to another field-light failure. It's the second time this season the Colts have been "blacked out."

A second-game win would have enhanced Westminster's chances at a playoff berth. The Colts now face a tough challenge in sneaking into post-season play.

Taters

Westminster Colts

The Westminster Colts came away extremely lucky in their doubleheader split against the Taters in Division 4 play July 2.

The two clubs played another marathon as both contests were shortened. Westminster errors helped the Taters to an 18-17 first-game victory. The Taters scored in only two innings, but they batted around in both after being held scoreless in the first three frames.

In game two, the Colts escaped a sweep with a 14-13 win behind the hitting of Greg Grinsell and Jeff Miller. Grinsell had six hits for the evening including a big home run in the nightcap. Miller added five hits in both games, three for extra bases with two doubles and a triple.

Westminster is now 4-4 with three doubleheaders to go. All will be played in five days. The Colts need to win them all to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Lucky Dogs

Westminster Colts

Game 1: Lost 20-30
Game 2: Won 26-20

The Westminster Colts and Lucky Dogs split their doubleheader June 25 at Marymoor in what may have been a record-setting two-game set.

The two clubs combined for 97 runs (no misprint). The Lucky Dogs pounded the Colts 30-20 in game one and continued the onslaught with a 12-1 lead in game two. Down 20-9 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Colts sent 21 men to the plate, nearly batting around twice, and scored 17 runs to lead and eventually win, 26-20 in the time-shortened contest.

Cory Lanman and Steve Jessup had six hits in the doubleheader. Jesse Briones continued his hot streak adding five hits to lead the club in hitting at .700 after six games. The split kept the Colts at the .500 mark with a 3-3 record.

Westminster Colts

Ultras

Game 1: Lost
Game 2: Lost

The Westminster Colts took a substantial pounding against Ultras, the defending Division 4 champions, in a make-up game June 20.

Ultras took both games of the doubleheader to set Westminster's record back to .500 at 2-2. On the positive side, Jesse Briones had a perfect 5-for-5 evening with two hits in game one and three more in game two including a double. Briones leads the club in batting after four games with nine hits and an .818 average.

Andy Sedlacek kept the Colts close in game two with a third-inning home run. It was Sedlacek's first doubleheader this season. He also doubled in the opener.

Westminster must play the remaining games without its second leading hitter, Ben Coffin, who leaves with eight hits (including a home run and triple) and a .667 average in four games. The Colts look forward to his return should they receive a playoff berth.

Universal Avionics

Westminster Colts

Game 1: Won 8-7
Game 2: Won 19-8

The Westminster Colts finally started Division 4 play June 4 and took both games in their first doubleheader against Universal Avionics.

Behind the hitting of Greg and Ben Coffin, the Colts squeezed out a 8-7 victory in game one. The Coffins had three hits apiece as Westminster came up with a run in the bottom of the seventh to break the tie.

In game two, Ben Coffin went 4 for 4 with a home run, triple and two singles to lead the Colts to a 19-8 win. Jeff Hjort and Jesse Briones also contributed three hits each.

The Colts are a little rusty with the rainouts and extended layoff. With a little work on defense, Westminster hopes to win a playoff berth for the second straight season.
