Snow Lake - July 13, 2002
Dale and Tyler took a "scouting" trip on July 13, 2002 to see what
the trail was like and to see what the snow melt conditions were. Still
lots of snow in the Snow Lake basin, with the lake mostly still covered with the white
stuff. Beautiful day though! We hiked in shorts and t-shirts most of
the way up and it was quite pleasant. We ate lunch at the top of the
switchbacks on a large rock that overlooked Snow Lake (along with about a
dozen other people who had the same idea). A little cool breeze was
blowing that made us put our sweatshirts on after a few minutes. The trail
down to the lake was still snow-covered and a little steep in spots so we could
not really go down that way. So we decided to hike up the ridge to the
east to see how far we could go. Found a small trail that we could use
most of the way, when it was not covered over in snow. What a view when we got up
there! We were at around 4800 feet, I would guess. Just for kicks, I
pulled out my cell phone to see what kind of reception I could get -- 4 out of
five bars! Called Tammy at home to let her know where we were and that we
would be home in time for supper.
