Christian testimony: “I was one of the fortunate ones who God touched at an early age. I grew up in a Christian home and had parents who were active in our small church in Wenatchee. Dad was the music leader and mom played the piano and organ. I became a Christian during summer vacation Bible school when I was going into the fourth grade, a time when God really impressed upon me what being a Christian meant – that it was a personal decision to turn my life over to His control and leadership. Since then my Christian life has been thrown many challenges. Being a first-born, practical, strong-willed, stubborn, independent person did not make things easy sometimes! God had to remind me on many occasions that I was not quite giving everything over to Him. I was hanging on to some things. However, He has been faithful throughout, enabling me to grow in my knowledge of Him and what He wants for my life. I have been very blessed with a loving wife and three great children.” How has the Lord used you in Westminster’s athletic program? “Primarily, this has been through the organizational gift that God has blessed me with. During my early years of sports participation at Westminster, I occasionally noticed some areas of potential improvement. I was always willing to help, and that eventually led me to the organizational leadership of the softball program and the Eastside Church Volleyball League.” Ministry goals: “Our sports ministry plays a vital role in providing a way for those individuals that might not otherwise darken the door of a church to participate in a team sport with other Christians. It also provides another way for fellow Christians to have some fun and fellowship together. Over the years, I have seen many strong friendships come from these programs. I have also been witness to testimonies of individuals who were invited to play and eventually came to know the Lord. I have seen the impact this ministry has had on opposing players. Hopefully they see a difference in our attitudes and the way we approach the game as Christians. What is important to always keep in mind is that we are the only Jesus some of these individuals may ever see. I see my main goal, then, as continuing to provide whatever organizational support I can to ensure that the Westminster sports ministry programs remain strong. However, there are so many other things that can be done to enhance these programs. It will require other individuals to whom God may be leading to bring their talents and ideas to the party. This newsletter and the new web site are just two of those things. The possibilities are unlimited.” Reaching the community through athletics If you’ve been around Westminster for the last couple of years, you’re familiar with the “chapel stories” that are presented on various Sunday mornings. The chapel stories not only allow us to meet members of the Westminster family but also encourage us to share our faith with others. In keeping with the chapel story theme, the adult nurture department of Westminster will be introducing a group of individuals who desire to reach out to the community through athletics. Each week from May through September, participants in Westminster’s softball program have the opportunity to touch lives through encouragement and sportsmanship. Beyond the scope of fellowship, the Westminster athletic program is preparing to launch an effective sports ministry that will reach those who do not know Jesus Christ. Through this newsletter and through the new Westminster Sports web site, you’ll have the opportunity to meet players who have a heart to share God’s love on the ball field and who wish to extend Westminster’s vision of ministry. As they are introduced, please remember them in prayer and support them with your encouragement.
