Vol. 1, No.2

Player profile:  Jeff Miller

Wife's name: Vikki

Children: Elyse (2)

Years attending Westminster: 8

Years participating in Westminster sports: 6

Occupation: Controller

Job description: "I manage the accounting department within a small manufacturing company. Among the controller's responsibilities are overseeing staff, developing and enforcing policies and procedures and ensuring compliance with tax laws. Because we are a small company, I am also in charge of our computer network and software systems. We are currently undertaking the implementation of a new company-wide software system, and I am the project leader. Over the years, I've worked for small businesses. I've had great opportunities to help these companies grow and to learn from some terrific people.

Athletic career: Junior high school track, club soccer and golf; intramural volleyball and soccer; church softball.

Christian testimony: "I was born in Charlotte, N.C. and attended my grandparents church at a young age, but I stopped going to church when my parents divorced. I had always believed in God, but never committed my life to Him. It wasn't until I met my wife Vikki that I was challenged to take my relationship with the Lord seriously. That meant inviting Jesus Christ into my heart and allowing Him to guide and direct my life. Through prayer, Bible study and Christian fellowship here at Westminster, my relationship with the Lord has grown."

What has been your experience in playing for Westminster? "Westminster softball has been a blessing to me. In a large church like Westminster, getting to know people can be a challenge. I decided to participate as a way to meet and get to know more people within the church. Over the years I've participated, I've met some wonderful people who have helped me in my walk with the Lord. On the field, my competitive streak has a tendency to overwhelm my better judgment. The graciousness and good humor of those around me help to channel that competitive energy in constructive ways on and off the field. I pray that in the years to come, the Lord will use me in similar ways.

Ministry goals: "During my working life, I've been fortunate to work with some wonderful Christian people. They've shared a vision of how my faith should work in relation to all the people with whom I come in contact. It's my hope that those around me will see less of me while they see more of Christ. At work, at home, around town and on the ball field, I'm striving to make my words match my actions so that the world sees the life Christ offers them. In doing so, I hope that I will be used in every area of my life in ways that glorify God. I want the Lord to use me in places people don't normally expect to find Him and that they will see that a relationship with Christ is for everyone and in every situation.

Athletics provide opportunity for community outreach

Welcome to the second edition of the Westminster Sports newsletter. If you missed the last issue, the purpose of the newsletter is to introduce individuals who desire to reach out to the community through Westminster's athletic programs.

As you've noticed in the story above, the church offers men's and women's league softball which runs from April to September. In time, Westminster hopes to offer other league sports. It's a great opportunity for the church to touch lives in the community through encouragement and sportsmanship.

Beyond the scope of fellowship, the Westminster athletic program is preparing to launch an effective sports ministry that will reach those who do not know Jesus Christ. Some of the events that may take place next year (through the development of the Pro Sports Outreach ministry) include basketball, softball, tennis and volleyball mini-camps, a Christian athlete/parent leadership training seminar and perhaps a single-day softball outreach. As time goes on, we'll have more information.

For now, this newsletter allows you to meet individuals who have a heart to share God's love on the ball field and who wish to extend Westminster's vision of ministry. Again, please remember them in prayer and support them with your encouragement.

Golf outing a big success

Westminster's golf day was held Oct. 6, and 36 men and women enjoyed a great day with beautiful weather.

Prizes were awarded to the following golfers: Larry Epp and Linda Eames (closest to the pin, 6th hole); Larry Epp and Christine Lavik (accuracy drive, 10th hole); Ray Baker and Nancy Walkup (closest to the pin, 12th hole); Phil and Christine Lavik, Hal Smith and Jim Hershberger (team low gross); Jim Pearson (winner of golf lesson).

Pick-up basketball

The Westminster Gym is open to individuals wishing to play pick-up basketball on Monday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Note: If you would like more information on how to know Jesus Christ personally, or if you would like to read the testimonies of other Christian athletes, please contact the church at 425-747-1461 .
